Welcome! My name is Mark DeSimone. I’m a composer, musician and sound engineer. Here, I present my music and sound portfolio, and my blog. You can find the portfolio below, or feel free to explore the blog for various project-related entries.
First of all, I invite you to listen to my portfolio:
The opening explosion sound was created by layering several piano-based sounds. Sometimes it’s inconvenient to blow something up, so I have a method of creating explosion sounds from other ingredients. Click here to see an explanation of how I created this sound.
Below is an annotated track showing how I would create an interactive music score using either tension levels or random sequencing.
This video shows my interactive sound and music design for the open-source Pipmak engine demo. A few source sounds were taken from freesound.org, but most sound and all music is my own creation. I scripted all the audio/music behavior with LUA. The Pipmak demo was meant to introduce users to the capabilities of the Pipmak engine, which can be used to create Myst-style adventures. It and the game engine are available at sourceforge.
Below is a sound/music replacement video I produced as a final project for Berklee Music’s Introduction to Game Audio class. It’s a cutscene from the 2005 film-based game Aeon Flux. I created and produced all sound and music for this, aside from one or two sounds that were taken from freesound.org. Of course, the video is property of Terminal Reality, and I have only used it here for demonstration purposes.
Here’s a quick video showing my approach to making retro-style SFX.
A couple years ago, I used February Album-Writing Month as an excuse to write several retro-style tunes. These were really fun to write, and I thought they belonged in my portfolio. Some are already included in the playlist above.
Feel free to look around my blog for more sounds, songs and videos!
